Recipe 64: Beetroot Detox Smoothie

Have you ever had kruidnoten? If you are one of my Dutch followers, I am sure you have. If not; they are these little gingerbread like cookies that are sold during autumn, and they are part of this national holiday called Sinterklaas, which will take part at the end of the season. I love them. I love them so much, that I grabbed a huge bowl of them yesterday, and ate them all. Not such a good idea, as I went to bed with a bit of a stomach ache (I do not really eat artificial sugars or simple carbs in daily life, so this was pretty hard on my poor stomach). So before hitting the gym this morning, I decided to start the day with a bit of a detox: beetroot smoothie with banana and apple.
As I wrote in my previous post, I was at my parents' this weekend, and they have an amazing organic garden. Apart from a pumpkin, I also took some lovely, sweet beetroots home They are so fresh and extremely healthy! Antioxidants, potassium, vitamins, fibre... You name it. Plus, their color is amazing, especially in a smoothie!
Ingredients
  • Beetroots, small - 2 pieces
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Banana - 1 small or medium
  • Apple - 1 medium
Instructions
  1. When the skin is still on, wash the beetroots well. This way you will not lose any of the color, but still get rid of the sand.
  2. Peel the beetroots and cut them into small pieces. Also core and cut the apple - but please do me a favor and keep the skin of the apple on, because that is where all the good stuff is at.
  3. Add everything to a blender, and mix up!
If you are ever in need of a health boost like I did this morning, make sure to make this!
And - as always - do not forget to enjoy it while you are at it!

Liefs,

Debs.
