Recipe 41: Spicy Straws

I just love puff pastry. I love it so much, that it was one of the first things that came to my mind when I heard I should not eat dairy products anymore. Traditionally, it is made with butter. Lots and lots of butter. However, when I was walking around in my local supermarket this morning, I found vegan puff pastry! Just at the supermarket closest to my apartment, which made me very happy. My country is not very developed when it comes to selling vegan and dairy free products, but I guess I was just lucky with this one! As soon as I got home, I made myself to puff pastry straws - something I had been craving for ages. Unfortunately, I still have not found a good vegan cheese, so they are not cheese straws, but feel free to add some of that if you want to!
What do you need?

  • Puff pastry
  • Salt, preferably not too fine
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Paprika powder

 How to make it?

  • Preheat oven to the heat as described on the puff pastry package. I think most say approximately 400 degrees F, or 200 degrees C.
  • Take puff pastry out of the fridge. If you use a frozen kind, please let it defrost before you use it. It needs to be rather stretchy.
  • Slice up your preferred amount of puff pastry, and turn both ends of the straws in opposite direction, so you get a nice twisted pattern. Of course you could keep them regular if you want to.
  • Sprinkle over some salt, cayenne pepper, and paprika powder. You could also use other spices if you want to, it is a very easy recipe to adapt - but I preferred keeping it simple and spicy today.
  • Bake straws for 10-15 minutes, until they have puffed up and are golden brown. They should not be soft.

Oh, by the way, I am sorry for not posting anything in the past two weeks, but I have been extremely busy. One week from now my summer break will start, so you can expect many recipes then!

Liefs,

Debs.
