Recipe 34: Chocolate-Banana Smoothie

First of all, in case you had not noticed yet; Veggies and Vanilla is now on Facebook! I had not officially announced it on the blog yet, but here you go. Most followers are kept up-to-date through Instagram, but if you do not follow me there because you do not use the app, you can always go to

So I started this lovely Sunday morning off with some fruit, like I usually do. It is going to be a long day of studying, so I grabbed some bananas to make a lovely smoothie with. This smoothie is very chocolate-y and creamy, even though it only contains three ingredients, which are all very good for you. Bananas are great if you are going to have a long day, because they give you amazing amounts of energy. If you are a student, like me; make sure you eat bananas regularly!

What do you need?
  • Bananas, ripe - 2 pieces
  • Cacao powder, raw - 2 tbsp
  • Water, cold
You could also use processed unsweetened cocoa powder (I would not be able to explain why one is called cocoa and the other cacao, I guess that is just the way it is), but I would really recommend the raw kind. It is more expensive, but the nutritional value is so much higher. Nearly all those health benefits of eating chocolate you have heard about disappear once the cocoa beans are roasted, and thus made into regular cocoa powder. The raw kind lowers your insulin resistance, boosts your metabolism, reduces chances at cardiovascular diseases, and much more.

How to make it?
  • Normally I would just say: put all into the blender and mix. However, I totally forgot to actually measure the water, so I suggest you do the same as I did: take a blender, add banana in rough pieces (break them up into 3 pieces), sprinkle cacao powder on top, and put water into the blender until it is half way up the bananas. So say your bananas come up to the 800ml sign, you put water in till it is at the 400 ml sign.
This will give you enough energy to get through most of the morning. Enjoy!
